STATEMENT BY SHANE FOLAN

Labour candidate Shane Folan has called for greater investment in Garda resources to reduce crime rates, in and
around Donaghmede and Clongriffin. Particularly in light of the shooting incident in Donaghmede last night, more
resources are needed need to tackle anti-social behaviour and crime. Folan also reiterated his call for a new Garda Station in the Clongriffin and Belmayne area.

Shane Folan said;

“One of the issues that constantly comes up in our community is the fear of crime and anti-social behaviour. Knocking on doors this issue has come up again and again. This can be tackled but to do so we need to invest in public services, provide more Gardaí in our communities and develop appropriate facilities for young people.

“I’ve been actively campaigning for a new Garda Station in the Clongriffin and Belmayne area. Residents currently rely on the Coolock district Garda Station and Clongriffin Garda clinic for entire community. This poses major problems as Garda resources are already stretched, and with the population of Clongriffin and Belmayne set to grow to as many as 50,000 people in the next few years, limited Garda resources will be unable to provide an adequate service to the population.

“As a local area representative who regularly works on behalf of constituents who have been victims of, or witness to,
petty crime I believe the council and the Government can do more to improve community policing.

“One of the ideas Labour has also put forward is the new role of a Community Warden who would be the local
contact for the Council with residents, who would work with community groups, associations and the public to
address issues as they arise.

“I believe a Community Warden and a new Garda Station in Clongriffin would go a long way in meeting the needs of
our community. We need new ideas, new energy and new plans to address the concerns of Donaghmede and
Clongriffin if elected, it will be one of my main focuses.”

The post Folan Calls for More Garda Resources for Donaghmede and Clongriffin first appeared on Shane Folan.

I believe that a new, permanent Garda station is needed for the Clongriffin and Belmayne area. That is why I have been campaigning with Senator Aodhán Ó Ríordáin to call for one in recent months.

Residents have consistently raised concerns that the inclusion of this area in the existing Coolock Garda District is proving problematic due to the size and population of the area, which is only expected to grow in coming years. That is why I have been campaigning with the community to call for the Government to listen to the community and build a new Garda station as soon as possible.

We delivered a petition with 1,200 signatures to the Minister for Justice earlier this month. Next week, on the 27th March at 8:30pm in the Junction, Station Square, Clongriffin, I am hosting a public meeting with Aodhán Ó Ríordáin to discuss the next steps for this campaign.

We want to provide a space in which you can raise any concerns or ideas you have, and then we can discuss how we will move forward together.

I hope to see you there and as always, if you have any questions please do not hesitate to get in touch with me.

The post Public Meeting on Clongriffin/Belmayne Garda Station Campaign first appeared on Shane Folan.

This weekend I had dropped around a little update as to a few things happening in the area. In case you missed it amongst all the Christmas Cards, I’m posting it again here!

Policing – Garda Clinic

Representatives of An Garda Síochána from Coolock Garda Station, have commenced a ‘Garda Clinic’ in the Clongriffin Junction facility on Station Square. This is a pilot programme open most Saturdays, subject to resources, where there will be a member of the Gardaí available from 11 am – 1 pm to sign and stamp forms, take reports and offer advice on crime prevention.

Remember to report crimes as they occur to Coolock Garda Station 01-6664200 or in an emergency 999/112.

With the projected population for the Belmayne / Clongriffin area to be approximately 50,000 in the coming years, a dedicated Garda Station for the area is clearly now essential. My colleague Aodhan Ó Ríordáin has raised this in the Seanad on our behalf.

A number of residents have been in contact regarding the street lights along the main street and its environs. Please do not hesitate to contact us if there is a particular street lamp that is out of order, or if there is an area of the community that is particularly poorly lit as this can be a contributory factor to anti-social behaviour.

Belmayne Main Street and Avenue

The deadline for submissions for the upgrade of Belmayne Main Street and Avenue has passed and the planning has moved on to the next stage. Provided there are no objections or delays in this, the construction will start in May 2019, and go on for approximately 12 months. For further information on what the plan entails please see www.consultation.dublincity.ie/planning/belmayne-main-street-and-belmayne-avenue-dublin-13

Library for Belmayne / Clongriffin

Dublin City Council have confirmed that they are actively engaged in negotiations aimed at delivering a library and community facility for the Belmayne / Clongriffin area.

In August the City Manager informed us of the following:

‘The libraries management team is working with the City Council Planning and Development Department to identify a site within council-owned lands in Belmayne / Clongriffin area suitable for the development of a library community facility.’

We will continue to campaign for a permanent library facility in this community and we will keep you fully informed of developments.

Dublin North East Educate Together Secondary School

Educate Together has been awarded patronage of a new secondary school to serve Donaghmede, Howth and Belmayne. It will open in 2019.

Enrolment is now open for first years starting school in 2019 only. Closing date for completed applications will be Thursday 31st January at 5pm.

For further information and access to Admissions Policy and enrolment forms please go to their website: https://www.educatetogether.ie/dublin-north-east-etss

The post Belmayne / Clongriffin Update – December 2018 first appeared on Shane Folan.
